Rental Magica [Complete]

Rental Magica is a bit of an odd anime. It's mainly a series of one shot episodes relating the exploits of Iba Itsuki, the 2nd president of Astral, and his various employees as they combat evil spirits, demons, rogue mages, magical pollution, etc. What makes the show a bit odd is the fact that it initially can't decide if it wants to be a combat anime, or a highschool romance, a purely supernatural thriller, or a comedy. It literally has a bit of all those genres. Because of this, many people may be put off watching the show after a few episodes. Bear with it though, as it does get progressively better.

The sound is also well done. The opening theme is a catchy J-rock song which has become a favourite of mine (both in japanese and english). The sound effects and atmospheric music are generally good throughout the series. The characters are reasonably well realised. The characters of Itsuki, Honami and Adelicia are generally quite good, and an effort has been made to focus on specific characters in several episodes scattered throughout the series. This helps to round out the characters afair amount, but otherwise there is no real effort to develop the characters more - but then again, this type of anime doesn't really need character development.

Seto no Hanayome is one of the rarest types of anime you can find - a parody rom-com that is actually extremely funny!This is without doubt one of the funniest animes released in the past few years, and I have never seen parody done so well since the original Jungle wa itsumo hale nochi guu (especially Michishio Nagasumi's pardoy of Ken from Fist of the North Star, and Runa's father as the the terminator). Seto No Hanayome adds nothing new to the genre. It is another recycling of harem anime's. But its sheer presence of comedy is outstanding that you'll pay no attention to its unoriginal qualities. For the first time in a long time, a harem is done right. To sum up, Seto No Hanayome is the romantic comedy that you have been looking for. Its rollicking, its over-the top and its just plain straightforward. To say its funny, would be an understatement. This is cliche at its best.

The story was very thin, but in a way that was for the better. A basic premise; Two siblings living alone are inheriting a ridiculously large sum of money when the elder sister, one Fujiwara Naeka, comes of age inherit. However the twist to the usual setting; Due to assassins for the inheritance coming after their lives, Two maids are sent to live with them; One, a powerful, almost superhuman maid guy, and the other a calm, beautiful and powerful force of nature who acts as the maid guy's "Tamer" of sorts. There was minimal in terms of progress, but as I said, it is for the better. Save the last episode, I enjoyed the series very thoroughly. The series was light-hearted and fun, it was a pleasure and relaxing to watch each episode. And in the last episode, there is a slight hint at a another season being a possiblity, so there's a chance that there could be more to enjoy. I enjoyed this anime wonderfully. I would recommend watching at the first opportunity you get. However, if don't like boob jokes or maid comedy, I would avoid this series, considering that those two concepts make up about 80% of the series. Otherwise, sit back, relax and get ready to enjoy the perverted and hilarious antics of Kamen no Maid Guy.

東のエデン

 The plotline is very interesting and is revealed at a well managed pace, and this pacing creates the many moments at the end of each episode which leave the viewer wanting more and more from the series. However, the ending is somewhat abrupt, and does not really provide any full closure to the series itself – but when it is factored in that the series’ ending is actually presented in two extra movies, this ‘ending’ can be forgiven for its somewhat sudden stopping point. The intricacies of the story and the unfolding of the plot are very complex and rewarding to the viewer when uncovered, most of the time giving new questions to the viewers with each revelation. The character development is also handled well – Akira Takizawa, being the main character, of course has the most detailed development of the characters, but it is arguable that his actions practically push the plot entirely throughout the series, and his endearing personality and the hook of the mysterious events surrounding his past make him into an incredible main protagonist. Being a source of many different film references that he mentions frequently throughout the series also gives him a sense of realism that not many other protagonists can match, allowing the viewer to further understand his character.
